How Badly Does Beer Sabotage Weight Loss?
Ok, some may say I am an alcoholic but I like to have about 3 beers every evening with dinner. Everyone has an addiction whether it’s cigarettes, coffee, soda, exercise, etc. So how badly am I sabotaging my exercise and weight loss efforts? I had a baby one year ago yesterday and have yet to lose any weight. I exercise at least 4 days a week doing much cardio (3 mile jog) and some weightlifting.

alcohol consumption decreases testosterone production and the levels of circulating androgen in the bloodstream, this decreases not only strength but the resting metabolic rate, energy levels and the rate of recovery from exercise. the higher the BAC the lower test levels will be. consuming alcohol before bed disrupts the sleep cycles and decreases growth hormone (GH) secretion. GH is the most powerful fat burning hormone that the human body produces. alcohol also dehydrates the muscle cells and interferes with the Krebs Cycle which decreases fatty acid metabolism.
in terms of weight/fat loss there is not one positive to consuming alcohol on a regular basis. despite popular belief there is a lot more to weight loss than cals in vs. cals out. it’s all about manipulating the endocrine system in a positive manner through the diet and with regular exercise.
You are doing exactly what you need to lose weight. The cardio workout will do it. Don’t give up on it and 3 beers a night won’t hurt it. I will tell you that if you are doing a cardio workout at least 4 times a week then it won’t matter what you eat or drink because you will be burning it off. Now if the results are coming slowly which it appears that it is, then your body may be burning more of what you consume in a days time instead of already stored fat. If you are consuming too much junk food and beer then you should back off until the results start pouring in. If you are under eating then your body is being shocked and is storing fat thinking that it is being deprived. Kind of a double edge sword, huh?
Nurish your body and keep up with the cardio and eventually you will find that you will be burning off the beer and other foods. If you think you are drinking too much then back off one or two a night and see how it goes. Good luck…
I’m with you sister. I don’t drink 3 beers every evening, but I do make up for it on the weekends. I’m not a fitness expert (my routine is similar to yours) but I think you’re sabotaging your weight loss just as much as if you ate additional food in the evening with the same amount of calories. The only thing I can say is that consuming alcohol makes me sluggish the next day and I don’t always work out as hard. Try to cut back or at least drink a lower calorie beer.
How much weight do you plan to lose by lifting weights, jogging and having extra starch each night? (which is what beer is considered) My clients do NOT lift weights or jog and their alcohol consumption DOES sabotage weight loss. If you count it as a carb/starch and don’t eat carbs with your meal at the same time, you could get away with it. The average weight loss on my program is 10 pounds per month and you may begin building muscle and jogging (if you like) after you reach your goal. Email me for help.
Basically beer is high in calories….and does other strange things to your health that have never really been fully documented.
Why not switch to red wine (lots of anti-oxidants) or white wine. Or any other low calorie alchohol (alcopops have too much sugar).
My ex drank a crap load of beer. For years. Then he decided to quick drinking and start working out. And quess what? He lost 35 pounds that month. Just by quitting drinking. So there’s your answer.
